What is Root Canal Treatment?

The most well-known endodontic treatment is called “root canal treatment” or “root canal therapy.” This treatment is applied when the pulp tissue inside the tooth becomes inflamed, infected, or damaged.

When is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

When cavities in the tooth deepen and affect the pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerve tissue, intense throbbing pain occurs; in this case, root canal treatment is necessary. Similarly, trauma or a blow to the tooth can cause damage and infection in the pulp tissue, and root canal treatment may be required.

Root canal treatment is generally applied in problematic situations that manifest with symptoms such as toothache, sensitivity, or infection. The treatment aims to eliminate inflammation, infection, or damage inside the tooth. It helps preserve the tooth by preventing extraction.

What Should Be Considered After Root Canal Treatment?

It is recommended to avoid hard foods after root canal treatment.
Very hot or very cold foods should not be consumed for a while after the treatment.
Your tooth may be covered with a temporary filling or crown during the treatment. It is important that this temporary restoration does not fall off and is protected.
If you experience any pain or adverse reaction after treatment, you should contact your doctor immediately.

If mild pain occurs, painkillers can be taken.

How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?

Root canal treatment may take one or several sessions depending on the situation, the condition of the tooth, and the extent of the infection.

In the first session, the dentist cleans the inflamed or infected tissue inside the tooth, shapes the root canals, and eliminates the infection. This stage may be completed in one session, or a temporary filling may be applied and left for the next session, depending on the condition of the tooth and the extent of the infection.

In the second session, the root canals are disinfected and filled with a sterile filling material. In some cases, a third session may be needed to complete the treatment.

Will there be pain after root canal treatment?

Generally, pain is not experienced after root canal treatment. While some patients may feel mild discomfort after the procedure, others may feel almost no pain at all.

Since root canal treatment is usually used to treat a painful condition, mild pain or sensitivity may be experienced after treatment. Mild discomfort may be felt during the procedure due to the cleaning, shaping, and filling of infected or inflamed tissues and root canals.

However, if you experience severe pain, increasing swelling, unbearable pain, or other serious discomfort after root canal treatment, it is important to contact your dentist immediately.
