Orthodontic Treatment

Perfect Teeth, Perfect Smile

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with correcting, aligning, and properly positioning the teeth and jaw. Proper alignment of teeth is fundamental to “Smile Design.” The correct positioning of teeth affects appearance and smile.

Orthodontic treatments can generally last from a few months to several years. Every patient is different, so the treatment duration and the method used may vary depending on the patient’s condition and the complexity of the treatment.

When is Orthodontic Treatment Performed?

  • Crowding of teeth; crowding between teeth or incorrect positioning of teeth
  • Occlusion Disorders; misalignment of the upper and lower jaws
  • Speech Problems; incorrect pronunciation of sounds due to misaligned jaws
  • Jaw Problems
  • Missing or Excess Teeth; missing or extra teeth can cause jaw alignment problems. Aesthetic Reasons; smile design may require orthodontic treatment

Does Age Matter in Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatments are generally preferred to begin before the growth and development of the teeth and jaw are complete. However, the appropriate timing may vary for each patient.

Orthodontic treatment usually begins in childhood or adolescence, as the growth and development of the teeth and jaw are still ongoing during this period. However, successful orthodontic treatments can also be applied to adults.

Even if the growth of the teeth and jaw is complete, orthodontic treatments can be applied to many adults to correct the position of the teeth or correct jaw discrepancies.

What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a commonly used orthodontic treatment method, preferred over braces due to their high aesthetic appeal. These aligners are custom-made. Before treatment begins, the orthodontist obtains a 3D image of the patient’s mouth using digital or traditional measurements. These images are used to design the clear aligners with the help of computer programs.

Clear aligner treatment works as follows:

The aligners are used for a specific period (usually 1 week ) and then replaced with the next set of aligners. Each aligner is specially designed to allow for gentle movement of the teeth. Aligners are typically worn for most of the day. They can be removed for occasions such as eating and brushing teeth.

Everything You Want to Know About Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment sessions are generally painless. At the beginning of treatment, mild discomfort or pain may be felt. Especially during the initial period when braces or other orthodontic appliances are first applied, there may be a feeling of pressure on the teeth, mild sensitivity or discomfort in the oral tissues. Other than that, no other adverse effects occur. Patient wax can be placed on areas where the wires cause discomfort to protect the tissues.

When braces or orthodontic appliances are first applied, you may experience a foreign body sensation in your mouth, a different feeling caused by the wires or brackets on your teeth, or your tongue may need to adjust to your normal speaking habits. This can cause some people to experience slight difficulty speaking or a change in their speech.

However, this adjustment period is usually short-lived. Over time, the tongue and lips become more comfortable with the wires and brackets, and speech returns to normal. Typically, within a few days or weeks, there is no noticeable difference in speech.

During the first few days of treatment, choosing softer foods can provide comfort for your teeth and mouth. It is especially important to avoid hard or sticky foods. The consumption of foods such as chips, gum, and hard candies should be limited. Taking small bites and chewing slowly can help minimize the impact on braces or appliances. It is important to clean your teeth and orthodontic appliances regularly after eating.
