What is Prosthetic Treatment?

Prosthetic treatment is a dental treatment performed to replace missing teeth and solve functional and aesthetic problems caused by tooth loss. Prostheses aim to restore normal chewing function and improve smile aesthetics by replacing the lost tooth or teeth in cases of tooth loss.

Prostheses can be divided into two main categories:

Fixed Prostheses: These are prostheses where teeth are permanently placed and cannot be removed. Fixed prostheses can generally be in the form of crowns, bridges, or inlays supported by dental implants. These prostheses are placed in the areas where teeth are missing and are fixed.

Removable Prostheses: These are prostheses used in cases of missing teeth and can be removed by the user. These prostheses are designed to replace missing teeth and can be removed from the mouth.

What are the Types of Dental Prostheses?

Dental prostheses can be classified according to whether they are fixed or removable, whether they are implant-supported or tooth-supported, whether they are bridges or single crowns, and the material used.

Tooth-supported prostheses can be fixed or removable. These prostheses are supported by natural teeth. Bridge prostheses are used to replace missing teeth by resting on adjacent healthy teeth. Tooth-supported removable prostheses are used to replace several missing teeth. In these prostheses, a custom-made prosthesis is created to replace the missing teeth.

Implant-supported prostheses, similar to tooth-supported prostheses, can be fixed or removable. Implant-supported fixed prostheses are prostheses that rest on and are fixed onto dental implants. These prostheses are reliable because they are placed on the strong and stable structure provided by the implants. Because fixed prostheses are not removable, they provide patients with a feeling more similar to natural teeth and can restore chewing function closer to normal teeth. Implant-supported removable prostheses are prostheses that rest on dental implants but can also be moved or removed in the mouth.

According to the material used:

Metal-Supported Porcelain; means applying a porcelain veneer on a metal substructure.

Zirconium-Supported Porcelain; This means applying a porcelain veneer onto a zirconium substructure. This material combination is preferred especially to provide an aesthetic appearance and durability.

How to Clean Dental Prostheses?

If fixed prostheses are used, regular and proper brushing, flossing (super floss), or interdental brushing are necessary to keep the prosthesis clean and healthy.

If removable prostheses are used, they should be removed and brushed with liquid soap at least twice a day. At night, prostheses must be removed, cleaned, and then soaked in water or a special solution.

What is the Lifespan of Dental Prostheses?

Removable prostheses can generally be used for many years. Wear and tear on these prostheses can affect their lifespan; over time, the fit may deteriorate, and they may need to be replaced.

The lifespan of fixed prostheses varies depending on the materials used and the individual’s oral hygiene. Generally, fixed prostheses made with quality materials and regularly maintained will last for many years.

Night Guard

A night guard is a special protective appliance used to manage or help protect teeth, a problem often called bruxism, which is the clenching and grinding of teeth. Bruxism is characterized by the unconscious clenching or grinding of teeth during stress, tension, and sleep. In the long term, teeth clenching can lead to wear and tear on teeth, fractures, pain, and temporomandibular joint problems.

A night guard is a transparent appliance custom-made for a person’s teeth. Using this custom guard regulates tooth contact, thus reducing tooth wear. It also reduces pressure on the jaw and surrounding muscles, alleviating pain and discomfort caused by bruxism. A night guard can also improve sleep quality and help protect teeth.
